Student Experiences

Picture
Jamar, Turkey
With last month coming to an end, I approach my seventh month in Istanbul, Turkey. The country has voted to pass a critical referendum. School is in its final week, and Rotary has once again made us feel at home. In addition, I have been able to see more of Istanbul.
Away from politics, things at school are coming to an end as the seniors prepare for summer break. There are only two more weeks remaining in the school year and as a going away gift our teachers have prepared final exams (unfortunately it’s not a joke). Also the Film Project that I have been a part of is complete! Next week we will watch all the submitted entries and choose a winner. We made our own sample film about Bulimia to encourage others. This project showed me the value of teamwork because I could see how everyone played a vital role in its completion. With this in mind for future projects, I will be more aware of everyone’s talents and how I can contribute.
With this month coming to an end I continue to reflect on my exchange. With each day I learn a little more and more.

Owen, Germany
I’m doing pretty great honestly, I have some homesickness but that’s only just now starting to kick in.  It feels pretty great knowing I’m on exchange, I’m learning so much German and feel like I’m growing a lot as a person too.  I’ve been able to be first, I’ve put myself forward and have made many friends, it turns out I just needed to step out of my comfort zone.
I hope that I did the report right haha!  Thank you all again for helping me come here, this has been the greatest experience of my life so far!

Maggie, Mexico
These weeks that I have been in Mexico have been a dream! I absolutely love being an exchange student. I really blend well and appreciate this culture that I have been in. My challenges have been the language barrier but I am improving my Spanish every day. I have had many successes though. Each day I remind myself to be thankful of everything here, and I have so much to be thankful for because my host family and friends are great. I try to talk to someone new every day and so far I have accomplished that. I have learned about myself that trying new things is something that I really like to do and should do more of. I have had new experiences here like going to Los Toros, or Bull Fighting, my first Taekwando class, going to the Mexican Fair, trying new foods, cooking new foods, and meeting so many new friends.
I think it is important to go out of my comfort zone and talk to new people and try new things, even if I am nervous that my Spanish is not good enough. I know that the first month has been so great and I have a lot more to look forward to. I will continue to try to be grateful and present. In the next month I would like to do community service and try at least one other new class at the gym. This opportunity to be in Mexico has definitely been one of the best things to happen in my life and I am very excited for what is in store in my coming months.
